Stamp Booklets and Oil Company Logos

Chris Coggins

A number of stamp ‘booklets’ have been issued with oil company logos on the front and/or back cover, on advertising panes in the booklet or on the stamps themselves. For the purposes of this article ‘booklets’ include :

In compiling this list I have used booklets in my own collection, references in magazines and PSW 7. Not all booklets are listed in PSW 7, although some of the stamps with logos are listed (e.g. PETRO-CANADA, Suriname, Sweden - MOBIL) and there is some confusion : PSW 7 includes the New Zealand booklets under UK. Those listed in PSW 7 are asterisked (or the stamps where appropriate) although the New Zealand 1954 and United Kingdom 1971 are described here in more detail. PSW does not include many references to Commemorative booklets or Presentation Packs.

Two State oil Companies have issued Commemorative books, with the oil company logos on stamps and elsewhere in the booklet. At the time of its formation in 1975, the Canadian company was known in some quarters as Pierre Elliott Trudeau’s Rip Off, and reflected concern at rising prices of oil (i.e. OPEC) and increased political involvement in non-OPEC countries.

An item from Gibbons Stamp Monthly in October 2001 reports on varieties of the Petro-Canada stamp. The Petro-Canada booklet has 12 x 46c self-adhesive stamps. The pane was unusual in that the individual stamps were separated by straight die-cuts, wit a short zig-zag section in the centre of each side. This resulted in stamps from the booklet having one projecting tooth on the top and left edges, and two along the bottom and right edges. A variety was prepared to produce single stamps, with the die-cutting machinery adjusted to cut through the backing paper and that the die head was rotated 180 degrees – so that the stamp shows two teeth on top and left edge and one tooth on bottom and right edges. Reported quantities are one million f the booklets, but only 150,000 of the single stamps, most of which were included in either the JulySeptember 2000 Collector Pack or the annual Collection Yearbook.
